Maura Healey (D)
Geoff Diehl (R)
Wages
Healey supports raising the federal minimum wage, saying, “At the federal level, we need to raise the minimum wage, pass the #PROAct, expand access to childcare, and so much more. [1] | Diehl voted against raising the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour. [2] |
Paid Time Off & Sick Leave
Healey said that “MA is lucky to have a robust paid family & medical leave policy’ but “we need #PaidLeaveForAll.” Healey expressed her support for the American Families Plan, saying, “[it] will be transformative.” [3] | Diehl voted against paid family and medical leave for working families who need to care for themselves or a family member. [4] |
Health Care
As Massachusetts’ attorney general, Healey defended the Affordable Care Act from attempts to dismantle it, saying, “The ACA remains the law of the land and it needs to stay that way.” | Diehl has not come out in support of lowering the cost of prescription drugs or addressing drug companies’ price gouging. [6] |
Healey worked to ensure discounted prescription drugs are accessible for low-income and uninsured individuals. Healy sued the Sackler family and their company, Purdue Pharma, for their role in the opioid epidemic, resulting in a $4.3 billion payment for prevention, treatment, and recovery across the country. She also announced a $26 billion resolution that holds multiple drug distributors and manufacturers accountable for the opioid crisis. [5] |
Economic Insecurity & Inflation
Healey has proposed combining several tax credits for families, which would result in over 700,000 families receiving $600 in credits per child. | Diehl has yet to announce any policies to tackle inflation. [8] |
Healey supports refunding Massachusetts’s excess tax revenue and is monitoring gas prices for evidence of price gouging. She also prohibited price gouging of essential goods and services during the COVID-19 pandemic. [7] |
Meatpacking & Agriculture Industries
As attorney general, Healey worked to protect meat and poultry processing workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that “these workers are risking their lives to work throughout this pandemic and keep people fed – we need to do more to keep them safe.” [9] | Diehl has made no statements supporting meat and poultry processing workers. [10] |
Unions & Labor
Healey is a proud supporter of unions, saying, “At the federal level, we need to raise the minimum wage, pass the #PROAct, expand access to childcare, and so much more.” | Diehl voted against a 2012 bill that would have allowed childcare workers to form labor organizations. [12] |
She has received numerous endorsements from labor unions, including United Food & Commercial Workers Local 1459, UFCW Local 1445, UFCW Local 791, UFCW Local 328, Service Employees International Union Massachusetts State Council, Massachusetts AFL-CIO, Massachusetts Teachers Association, American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts, United Auto Workers, and American Federation of State, County, Municipal Employees Council 93, among others.
